Great Theatre Ephesus Guide from Kuşadası

Twenty-five thousand seats carved into the hillside — where Ephesus gathered and St Paul was shouted down.

Distance

20 km from port — lower-west end of Ephesus site

Travel time

25–35 min coach plus downhill walk through site

Time needed

Allow 20–40 minutes depending on climb

The Great Theatre of Ephesus could hold 25,000 spectators — one of the largest ancient theatres in the world. It sits at the western end of the site and is where St Paul addressed the Ephesian crowd, according to Acts 19.

Cruise ships dock at Kuşadası Cruise Port, a modern terminal 2–3 km north of the town centre. Ephesus lies near Selçuk, roughly 20 km east — typically 25–35 minutes by coach. Allow 5–10 minutes taxi to the bazaar or 15–20 minutes walk along the waterfront. Confirm your all-aboard time and keep a 60–90 minute buffer before departure.

The theatre was expanded under Roman emperors and used for gladiatorial contests as well as drama. Climbing the upper tiers rewards you with views over the orchestra, stage foundations and the harbour plain beyond — Ephesus was once a major port before the Cayster River silted up.

The climb to the top rows is steep and exposed in summer sun. Moderate fitness is enough; allow 20–30 minutes if you want upper-tier panoramas. Guides often give a talk at orchestra level — stay for context before climbing.
